Clean up your desktop: free your Mac or PC desktop again

The desktop is the most convenient place to put things, so it fills up fast. Screenshots, downloads, half-finished documents: anyone looking for something searches among a hundred icons. Here is how to get it free again.

Get order quickly

  1. Create a folder called “Desktop old” and drag everything into it that you don’t need today. The desktop is empty at once.
  2. Bring back only what you will really open in the next few days.
  3. Sort out the rest later, file by file, or right away with GetSpace.

Built-in helpers

Mac: Right-click the desktop and choose “Use Stacks” to group files by kind. On a Mac, screenshots go to the desktop by default. Press Shift + Command + 5 and choose “Options” to pick another location.

Windows: Right-click the desktop, then “View” and “Show desktop icons” hides all icons without deleting anything.

Rules to keep it free

The desktop is a temporary place, not an archive. Set a fixed place for finished files (for example “Documents/2026”) and tidy up briefly on Fridays.

How it works with GetSpace

On the start page, pick “Desktop” with one click. GetSpace shows you each file on its own.

  1. Keep or delete: right or left arrow.
  2. Press M to move a file to a folder. Recently used folders are ready with a number, one key press is enough.
  3. Press R to give the file a better name right away. The extension stays and nothing is overwritten.
  4. Moving and deleting only happen once you confirm in the summary.

GetSpace is a program for Mac and Windows and doesn’t run on phones. Send yourself the link and download it on your computer.
