GetSpace, CleanMyMac, DaisyDisk and others: which app for which job?

“Clean up my Mac” can mean many things. Sometimes it is about system junk, sometimes about what fills the disk, sometimes about going through your own files. Different programs exist for that. Here is an overview, including the cases where GetSpace is not the right choice.

System cleaners (for example CleanMyMac)

Programs of this kind mostly clean up what the system and other programs create: caches, logs, leftovers of removed apps. That is the right choice when you want space back without looking at your own files. For your documents, photos and downloads they do not make the decision for you.

Disk analyzers (for example DaisyDisk on Mac, WinDirStat or TreeSize on Windows)

These programs show as a map or tree which folders and files take up the most space. They are ideal for finding the big ones. What you do with them, you decide afterwards in Finder or Explorer.

File managers (for example ForkLift, Marta, Commander One)

These are replacement interfaces for Finder or Explorer, often with two panes, tabs and transfer features. They help with everyday file work, not specifically with going through a folder.

File viewers (GetSpace)

GetSpace goes through a folder file by file. Each file appears large, and you decide with one key: keep, trash, skip, move or rename. The gain is time: you glance at each file and decide right away without switching windows. Deleting only goes to the trash, and a summary comes first.

What fits when

Removing system junk: a system cleaner. Knowing what fills the disk: a disk analyzer. Going through your own files one by one and deciding: a file viewer. They do not exclude each other. Many people use a disk analyzer to find the folder and then go through it in a file viewer.

What GetSpace is built for

GetSpace is for Mac and Windows, runs locally and uploads nothing. It replaces neither a system cleaner nor a file manager. It saves you the work of reviewing hundreds of your own files one by one.

  1. Choose the folder you want to go through (for example Downloads).
  2. Go through the files with the arrow keys, space bar for the large preview.
  3. Check the summary and confirm. The files then sit in your system's trash.

GetSpace is a Mac and Windows app, so it doesn’t run on phones. Email yourself the link and download it on your computer.
