Delete files without risk: trash, undo and backups

The biggest worry when tidying up: deleting the wrong thing by accident. With three habits the risk is small: the trash, the ability to undo, and a current backup.

The trash is your safety net

What is in the trash can be restored until you empty it. On a Mac, choose “Put Back”; on Windows, “Restore”. Don’t empty the trash right away, but only after a few days.

When files are gone immediately

On Windows, Shift + Delete removes files immediately and permanently. On network drives and some USB drives, the system can also delete files without a trash. Be careful when you tidy such places.

Make a backup

Mac: Time Machine backs up automatically to an external drive. Windows: File History or OneDrive folder backup protects documents and pictures. A backup is the only protection once the trash is emptied.

How it works with GetSpace

GetSpace is built so that you never lose anything for good.

  1. Nothing is ever deleted permanently, only through your system’s trash.
  2. While sorting, you undo any step with Z, including a rename.
  3. The summary shows everything before deleting, biggest files first. “Keep after all” rescues single files.
  4. Your files and file names never leave your computer.

GetSpace is a program for Mac and Windows and doesn’t run on phones. Send yourself the link and download it on your computer.
